One Author: Multiple Stories

I’m often asked why I write books with such different subject matter. True, both books are fiction. One is Christian fiction, relating the journey of an Amish girl who leaves her community and the other one a historical war story.

I like to write stories that present a different point of view from the typical popular perspective. I tend to think there are “exceptions to the rule.”

Lizzie, the Amish girl desires freedom and peace, even though the Amish community is often portrayed as peaceful and content.

The Kommandant is a Nazi (a totally nasty, evil group) yet he is deeply unhappy with what his life has become. Both characters in each book deal with discontent, have life changing decisions to make and face the great unknown. Both characters are very atypical of their peers. Their heartfelt desires are diametrically opposite of what others expect. Change for both characters demands courage.

Lizzie faces the estrangement of her family. Loneliness becomes her new normal.  Everyday challenges her upbringing and intellect. The love of her friends helps her succeed.

If the kommandant wishes to change his situation he faces the high possibility of death. following the desires of one’s heart is never easy. The kommandant is fortunate to have the support of a steadfast woman and a loyal friend.

These books are very different in time and subject but the themes are the same. Some people listen to a different drumbeat and follow the road less traveled. May the surprises they give broaden our horizons and allow us to accept the exception!  Vive la difference!
