Sophie survives the Nazi oppression and rules of her day to day life by focusing on her tasks and obligations. She doesn’t think too far ahead because the future is unknown. The killing and sorrow of the present makes the time ahead too desolate to contemplate. Sophie believes in solving problems so now she makes a plan. Plans are difficult but everyday gives Sophie more clues to tie her strategies together. She knows the implementation of a plan requires courage and the possibility of death. So what can be worse? Living with evil and allowing “fate” to run its course or trying, just trying to change the situation.
