The Good Land

"Now This is a Good Life"

Rural folks, especially farmers have an intimate relationship with that entity of which they see and work with every day.  It’s rarely referred to as property, sometimes acreage but mostly just land.  Farmers nurture and apply good stewardship to that which will provide and give harvest, but not without work, sweat and frustration. There are so many factors to consider: weather and expenses to name a few.

Many years after Lizzie Leaves and travels through the countryside to visit friends she has an intense yearning for the land. She has overcome the pain of being separated from her previous Amish family and community. But now, she wants to feel the soil sifting through her fingers and plant seeds, anticipating their growth. She longs for the green smells and trees, the wildflowers, rolling hills and the rhythm of the seasons. To hear birdsong and wind playing its soft melody through the trees would be a symphony delivered by a great master musician. She can almost touch the peaceful tranquility of the land. The good land. So, have any of you “left” the country but the country has never “left” you?
